Police kill escaped circus lions

From correspondents in Quito, Ecuador
November 29, 2003

POLICE shot and killed two lions that had escaped from a circus and roamed the streets of an Andean town, attacking a child, officials in Ecuador said today.

The lions - a male and a female - were shot yesterday because tranquiliser darts were not available, Chimborazo police chief Gonzalo Espinoza told reporters today.

"We had to sacrifice the animals to protect the people," he said.

One of the lions struck a boy, lightly wounding him, before the feline couple settled down near some bushes in a grassy park where they were shot repeatedly by two officers, Espinoza said.

The incident occurred in Riobamba, the capital of the Chimborazo region, some 160km south of Quito.
