Two Horses Latest Victims of Circus Cruelty
On Tuesday, May 11, 2004, two horses with the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus were struck by a freight train as they were being unloaded from the circus train near Dayton, Ohio. One horse died instantly and the other was euthanized at the scene. The horses were among the 70 animals traveling with the circus.
Ringling has had prior dangerous incidents involving its rail cars. In 2001, seven cars of a Ringling Bros. train—carrying both people and animals—derailed just outside Worcester, Massachusetts, and in 1994, 16 cars of Ringling Bros.’ 53-car train derailed in Lakeland, Florida, killing two circus employees and injuring 15 others.
Please send a polite letter to the officials below, asking them to investigate these two horses’ recent deaths to determine whether Ringling failed to comply with applicable standards and regulations:
