"Elephants need new home away from unacceptable circus environment."

9 Jan 2008

Search to find home for killer elephant

A meeting will be held today to determine which zoo will accommodate two circus elephants, after one crushed its handler to death on the New South Wales north coast.

The 54-year-old man was killed in Yamba about two weeks ago, and the Stardust Circus has since opted to give up its two asian elephants.

Several zoos will hold a telephone hook up this afternoon to determine which has the capacity to house the animals.

The Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo is one of the facilities under consideration.

Elephant ban

Meanwhile, the RSPCA has urged the circus not to bring one of the elephants involved in the handler's death to the Gold Coast this month.

The RSPCA's Michael Beatty says the Gold Coast City Council should revoke the permit it has issued allowing the circus to perform on the tourist strip.

"We are concerned that if the elephants do come up to the Gold Coast, not only is there a potential danger to the general public perhaps, in particular children, but also because of concerns the elephants will end up being more heavily restrained than they already are," he said.

Circus owner Jan Lennon says she has spoken with the Gold Coast City Council about safety concerns.

"There's no risk to the public, there's no problem there," she said.

"We will have temporary fencing up around as well. There's no risk to the public and never has been."
